Sometimes I smile at my shadow
it reminds me I exist –
in truth, that I am a body
– it reports that I persist.
Sometimes I smile at my shadow
on duller days it’s gone
it reveals what I neglect –
that life is only now and never not always on.
Sometimes I smile at my shadow
an event of cosmic place
it prompts me to be present –
saying “it’s okay to inhabit space.”
So yes – sometimes I smile at my shadow
but with it’s unspoken utterances of forgotten fact
confiding the wonder of existence
being polite, you see,
– I’m really just smiling back.
